Week 1, January 8-12

Monday 1-8: Course Introduction
HW: purchase textbook from OBT

Wednesday 1-10: Course intro – The Movies Begin (#2615 VHS)
HW: read page 27 “Film Analysis” and page 271 “Keeping a film journal” before Thursday’s screening;
Bring notebook to screening Thursday night and a pen light if needed.

Thursday screening 1-11- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Friday 1-12- reminder about viewing journal assignment; film discussion
HW - read Chapter 1 and 2;
Find a filmic example of one of the aspects listed under "Student Examples" on the class wiki. Follow the instructions on the Wiki and bring a film clip of the example.


Week 2, January 15-19

Monday 1-15- No class
HW - read Chapter 1 and 2;
Find a filmic example of one of the aspects listed under "Student Examples" on the class wiki and bring example to class Wednesday.

Wednesday 1-17- discuss Ch 1&2 and examine student examples
HW - read Ch 4 pages 58-76 for Monday;
Sign up for student examples on class wiki.

Thursday screening 1-18- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory ; develop one interpretive claim about the film in your film journal.

Friday 1-19- film discussion; assign comparative scene analysis
HW: read Ch 4 pages 58-76 for Monday and pages 77-97 for Wednesday; sign up for student examples on wiki


Week 3, January 23-27

M 1/22: discuss Ch 4: Mise en Scene 58-76 and examine student examples
HW: prepare student examples for Wednesday

W 1/24: discuss Ch 4: Mise en Scene 77-97 and examine student examples

Th 1/25: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

F 1/26: film discussion and discuss comparative scenes using the two Chocolate Factory movies
HW: Read in Wiki (PDF): Andre Bazin's "The Evolution of the Language of Cinema" by Monday


Week 4, January 29 – February 2

M 1/29: Answer any comparative scene essay questions; discuss Bazin's article

HW: read Cynthia A. Freeland "Feminist Frameworks for Horror Films" in Wiki for Monday and "Ideologies of Gender" in Chapter 11 pages 321-323 and "the Horror Film" in Chapter 13 pages 357-359; work on formal scene assignment; read Chapter 14 by Wednesday


Week 6, February 12-16

M 2/12: discuss Freeland's article, ideologies of gender, and horror films
