Week 2:
M 1/12 - Discuss introduction to folktales from around the world
Assignment: read introductions from the Cole and Yolen texts (the last of the introductions); sign up for the listserve (email s04-1830-request@clas.ufl.edu with "subscribe" in the body text.); check and see if you can log into the gradebook.

W 1/14 - Discuss sanitation of folktales for children and the scope of Cole and Yolen's texts
Assignment: read Clarke, M.B and A.G Clarke. Retellings: A Thematic Literature Anthology. Boston: McGraw Hill. 2004. pages 3-17; find example of a Cinderella text and bring into class Friday with the cover sheet.

Which fairy tale ends with the villian falling off a precipice in the Disney version and forced to wear hot iron shoes until she danced herself to death in the Grimm version? If the woman yesterday on Hollywood Squares had known the correct answer she would have won $100,000.

Week 3: Tales that Explain Natural Phenomena
M 1/19 - No class MLK Day
Assignment - start on reading of "Tales that explain natural phenomena" in Cole (list on page 783); start looking for your own example of a folktale that explains a natural phenomena and bring it to class

W 1/21 - No Class, but proceed with the assignments as normal - I will post the Cinderella pages as soon as possible.

F 1/23 - Discuss examples from students and set up groups for webpage assignment.
Assignment: read the following pages about how to use Dreamweaver before next Friday's class http://www.image.ufl.edu/help/dreamweaver/. There is a good bit of information on these pages, so read as much as you can to get a feel for the program, especially pay attention to the basics pages.

F 2/6 - Discuss student examples
Assignment : read "The Fool" section in Yolen

Week 6 The Trickster and the Fool
M 2/9 Watch Mutzmag : an Appalachian folktale and discuss the Fool
Assignment: start reading Fool and Noodlehead section in Cole and work on trickster paper

W 2/11 Finish the last of Mutzmag, discuss the movie, and answer any questions about the paper
Assignment: keep reading the Fool and Noodlehead section in Cole and work on rough draft of trickster paper

F 2/13 (Friday the 13th) - rough draft of paper DUE
Assignment: peer critique your group members' rough drafts. Bring two copies of the peer critiques Monday: one for the writer and one for me. Keep reading the Fool and Noodlehead section in Cole. Be sure and bring a disk Monday also with at least one group member's rough draft so that we can practice links.

Week 7 Trickster Paper, the Fool, and web page
M 2/16 - Meet in the Computer lab in CSE Room E211. Be sure and bring a disk with at least one group member's rough draft so that we can practice links.
Assignment: Polish paper (two copies of your final paper should be turned in a pocket notebook with your rough draft and critiques) and finish reading Fool and Noodlehead section in Cole. Begin reading"Heroes" in Yolen
