Schedule:

This schedule will change and adapt to the needs of the class as we progress throughout the semester. Readings in Educating Esme will cover the course of the semester.

Read "Punctuation Made Simple". As a group, come up with one standard way and one creative way to teach one class of children and one class of adults your grammatical character.

Sign up on the listserv by Tuesday night at midnight. Do not use an aol or hotmail account -- use your ufl.edu account. To sign up on the listserve, email s05-2202-request@clas.ufl.edu. Read excerpts from Anne Fadiman's Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader -- "Preface," "The Joy of Sesquipedalians"

Read several brief adult literacy narratives: "Richmond," "Wallis," "Henderson"

Note the different writing styles between the two different readings.

Brainstorm about your personal lit. narrative. Work on literacy narrative rough draft.

And don't forget to buy Educating Esme.

How can I use what I learned in my elementary classroom with my students?

Meet in Building 105 Room 110 Circa lab: Bldg 105 is located behind the former MVP Sports Bar and Grill which is accross University Ave from Library West.

Discuss online basics and looking at literacy narratives online. Webpage one: your literacy narrative geared either toward an audience of your elemetary class, your student's parents, or your principal and fellow teachers.

Turn in student release form.

Dodgson in either PDF formator on-line at (http://www.hoboes.com/html/FireBlade/Carroll/Words/). Skim all five sections (it is a little outdated, but we will relate it to class.) And do you know who Dodgson is? What is his pen name?

 

Wednesday, Feb 2

Give back literacy narrative and discuss writing hints and feedback.

 

Discuss letter writing, Dodgson essay, and do a practice letter using Esme's class as an example.

 

Finish Part 2 in Educating Esme.

 

Read e-mail ettiquette online or in PDF format.

Begin looking for a children's book, either fiction or non-fiction, that has technology in it or addesses technology. It can be a very subtle use of technology (like only visible in the illustrations) or it can be a primary component to the story.

 

Week Six:

Monday, Feb 7

Due Today: Story

Listen to various stories (when I return them)

How can I use what I learned in my elementary classroom with my students?
What does appeal to children today in regards to stories and picture books (this could be answered in terms of content or presentation)? How do you get reluctant readers to read? How is storytelling used in your school? In what ways are stories told to the students you interact with? Do they only receive stories at school? Where else?

Use Educating Esme for sample students to write letters about.

Discuss audience and classroom experiences for possible letter topics.

Practice Letter Form with Commas

 

Write letter rough drafts. Make sure that your letter is formatted correctly for your rough draft since this is one area we will be checking in the peer review session.

Review sample underachievement letter and achievement letter to parents (in PDF). What is good and bad about these two letters?

Bring in a children's book on Wednesday, fiction or non-fiction, that addresses or has technology in it in some form or fashion.

Play video games and interactive texts for children.

Discuss pedagogical uses of technology.

Find one specific example of how a teacher could use technology in the classroom and be prepared to discuss in class.

Finish Part 3 in Educating Esme.

Week Eight:

Find one particular video game or interactive fiction that is availible free online that is targeting toward children dealing with or on one of the following topics: Environment, Technology, Fairy tales, Comics, History, Television

Disuss lab experience.

What is technology?

Discuss technology in the classroom and pedagogical uses of technology. Discuss technology in education as a current event.

Find two articles in a scholarly journal on the topic of technology and education (think about what you want to write your technology report on and possibly use these articles for your research).
