ENL 2022: Survey of English Literature: 1750 to the Present | ||||
Journal assignment: You will keep a reading journal for the entire semester. For each class period that you have assigned reading (almost everyday) you will write a one page response journal on the reading. If we are reading more that one work, you may select the work you choose to write on. The journal will help you study for the exams, be a resource for future classes, and give you a jumping off point for class discussion. Journals are to be typed in MLA format and printed out for everyclass period. They should be in Times New Roman 12 point font and have an MLA works cited line as the paper's heading. For example: Teacher's name Class Date Author's last name, author's first name. Title of Book. City of publication: Publishing company, Year. This is the MLA format for a one author book. If the reading uses another format, then use the correct MLA format for each individual reading. Ex. Wolfson, Susan and Peter Manning. "The Romantics and Their Contemporaries." The Longman Anthology of British Literature, 2nd Ed. Ed. David Damrosch. New York: Longman, 2002. 2-29. Blake, William. "The Chimney Sweeper." The Longman Anthology of British Literature, 2nd Ed. Ed. David Damrosch. New York: Longman, 2002. 122-123. After you have the correct heading, respond to the reading. As you read in your first assigned reading, everyone will respond differently. You may use any approach you find appropriate to respond to the text. You may also include a very brief summary of the work for your own benefit, but the focus of this journal is for you to respond to the reading. You should end each journal with any questions you have about the text that you would like addressed in class. Each journal entry should be one page: each journal entry should begin on a separate page. The journal is due in class the same day the reading is due. Always bring your journals to class. I will take up journals at least three times in the semester, but could take them up at anytime. Keep up with your reading and your journals. |
