GEB 3213 Student Advice

Writing in Business

Student advice to incoming students

The following are responses when I asked my Fall 2006 GEB3213 students what advice they would give incoming students. Here is the advice.

Student 1:
The course is very practical. It is fairly hard to do the grading criteria. You will have to work fairly hard to receive an A in this class. You will learn a lot of useful business writing tools.

Student 2:
I would tell my friend to attend her office hours in order to get extra help. It is possible to get an A but it is a lot of work.

Student 3:
Don’t forget all the small things like the PDF’s [print out questionnaires for assignments]. You’ll do fine if you don’t skip class.

Student 4:
Make sure you have a working printer to get everything done. Come to class and it should be easy. You don’t have to be the best writer, but show some effort and try to improve on some skills. Don’t take this class until you are at least a junior.

Student 5:
The advice I give to a student is that they need to be prepared to act professional and have everything prepared as professional as possible.

Student 6:
I would advise the student to be very meticulous when turning in writing assignments for this class. Revise the document several times to check for any minor mistakes.

Student 7:
Go to office hours.

Student 8:
I would advise students to be prepared to work and put in a lot of effort. If you attend class and even office hours then assignments don’t seem as challenging. I would warn them about the large amount of teamwork and how much the group work affects your grade.

Student 9:
Visit the teacher and have her review your documents before turning them in. Never forget to send electronic copies.

Student 10:
Proofread your papers, and leave plenty of time to go over papers.

Student 11:
Make sure to take notes during lecture. It will help during the quiz. Visit office hours because grading is tough. Ask questions.

Student 12:
I would be prepared to do a lot of written work. The grading scale was a lot tougher than other sections, so make sure to have everything perfect. The teacher is helpful when reviewing your paper before the deadline.

Student 13:
Grammar check x 1,000,000 – even though that’s impossible. Cathlena knows her stuff and she takes it seriously.

Student 14:
Buy the book early to be able to find a used copy. Even though you may think you are already a good writer, following the book’s guidelines will get higher grades and you will improve.

Student 15:
Go in to office hours and speak with Cathlena about your papers. She will give good, constructive feedback on how to improve your paper.

Student 16:
It is a lot more work then you think if you are taking a lot of classes with a lot of work. This class has the most work at the end of the semester so be prepared. Make sure you proofread and all formats are correct.

Student 17:
Use the peer reviews to your advantage – what you see other people do and what other people say about your work can be very helpful.

Student 18:
Don’t wait until the last minute to finish assignments. Get into office hours to review your draft before due date. Go to lecture.

Student 19:
Take the class seriously. If you learn what is being taught, it can be very beneficial. Even though it’s not a core class, it may be one of the most useful classes in the long run.

Student 20:
Be on time and keep you with your work. Pay attention to every word you write. She is picky, but it will help in the long run.
